Forgetting People’s Names

nervous.gifI was walking on the mall. I came across a face of a stranger saying “Hi Tonet.” Wondering where we met, I politely smiled and said Hello in return.

Whewww… Forgetting someone’s name is horrendously embarrassing isn’t it? And it’s even worse if you were introduced to them only few days ago. Often when we hear a name we don’t properly register it - the name just skims off the surface of our mind.

It’s not struggling to recall names that causes the problem, it’s not having fixed them in my memory in the first place. If I haven’t fixed something in memory then, of course, I won’t recall it later - because there is nothing to recall!

The huge benefits in being able to recall names

Apart from not suffering the embarrassment of forgetting someone’s name, there are other positive benefits. To build instant rapport with someone, being able to remember their name (and not having to be reminded of it) is vital.

A teacher of mine way back in High School gave me a book entitled How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie as a Christmas exchange gift. I love the book since it helped me raise my confidence because I used to be very timid. I remember a particular chapter explains that “Remembering Names” are Great Rapport Builder.

Just think how it feels when someone you’ve just met, who only heard your name briefly once when you were introduced, remembers your name and uses it a couple of hours later. That sends you the signal that you are interesting and important enough for them to not only listen out for your name but to use it. It’s a great rapport builder indeed.
