Pasko sa Pinas | Get Into the Christmas Spirit | Christmas in the Philippines

parol.jpg

Christmas in the Philippines is a mixture of Western and native Filipino traditions. Filipinos are proud to proclaim their Christmas celebration to be the longest and merriest in the world. The bamboo parol or star lantern is the symbol of Christmas in the Philippines, representing the guiding light, the star of Bethlehem. Filipinos enjoy decorating their homes not only with star lanterns but also with all sorts of Christmas decors. Santa Claus, the Christmas tree, sending Christmas cards, and singing carols have all been inherited from the cultures of the West. However, these have all been adapted to fit the nature and personality of the Filipino people. I can’t wait this Christmas Eve, it is one of the traditions most families celebrate. It is a night without sleep and a continuous celebration moving right into Christmas Day. As December 24th dawns, the last Mass of Simbang Gabi is attended; then preparation begins for Noche Buena, which is a family feast that takes place after midnight.

Get Into the Christmas Spirit by:

  • Decorate your house for the holidays: Christmas Decorations and Christmas Tree Lights
  • Preparing for Food To Donate
  • Grinding with Christmas Music
  • Have a Christmas Movie marathon
  • Shop early. Nothing takes away the Christmas spirit like fighting for parking and struggling through crowds.
  • Drop spare coins in foundation collection buckets.
  • Do something nice for someone.
  • Volunteer your time to a worthy holiday cause. Even if you are busy, you can spare an hour or two to help people less fortunate than yourself.
  • Collect food and personal items and donate them to a local shelter for the homeless or for battered women.
  • Read “A Christmas Carol.”
  • Don’t spend more money than you have. Anxiety over after-Christmas bills can ruin your holiday.

Christmas is the happiest season of all. Have a blast this Christmas!

  1. Hard to believe Christmas is already around the corner. I am ready for some Thanksgiving turkey though.
